Washing curly hair

Scalp Cleansing

Start your healthy curl routine with your scalp. Maintaining a healthy scalp is key to healthy hair growth, shine, and overall hair health. It is important to monitor your scalp for excessive oil and product buildup. Insufficient or excessive washing can harm the health of your scalp.

Keep your scalp healthy and try to prevent product buildup that can make curls appear lifeless, shapeless, and even sticky. Regularly using a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup, dead skin cells, and oils will keep your scalp healthy and balanced.

For those with excessively oily or very dry scalps, the Curlsmith Detox Kit can be beneficial, as it balances the scalp microbiome and helps maintain a healthy scalp. It also contains a natural, fine-textured scrub that gently exfoliates dead skin cells and product residue from the scalp.

Washing Frequency

Due to the dryness of curly hair, it is generally advised not to wash your hair too often or to strip away too much natural oil. Sulfate shampoos are particularly drying for fragile curly hair, so it is strongly recommended to avoid sulfates. Also, avoid washing your hair daily. Just like our facial skin, scalp oiliness varies from person to person. If you notice oil accumulating on your scalp and roots after just one day, it means your scalp is naturally oily. If your hair is not greasy after a few days, but your scalp feels dry and tight, then your scalp is dry. Those with wavy hair types can wash their hair more frequently, for example, every other day, while curly and coily hair types can wash less frequently – even up to once a week.

Washing too frequently, such as daily or several times a day, can dry out the scalp, leading to discomfort and flakiness. Dry air can also dry out the scalp. To prevent curly hair loss, use more moisturizing products and sulfate-free shampoos.
