Scalp cleansing
Start with your scalp for healthy curls. Maintaining a healthy scalp is key to healthy hair growth, shine, and overall hair health. It’s important to keep your scalp clean to prevent excess oil and product buildup. Under-washing or over-washing can damage healthy scalp health.
Maintain a healthy scalp and avoid product buildup, which can make curls look lifeless, shapeless, and even sticky. Using a clarifying shampoo regularly to remove product buildup, dead skin cells, and oils will help keep your scalp healthy and balanced.
Those with excessively oily or very dry scalps may benefit from the Curlsmith Detox Kit, which balances the scalp microbiome and helps maintain a healthy scalp. It also contains a natural, fine-textured exfoliant that gently exfoliates dead skin cells and product buildup from the scalp.
Washing frequency
Due to the dryness of curly hair, it is generally advised not to wash your hair too often and not to wash away too much of its natural oils. Sulfate shampoos are particularly drying to fragile curly hair, so strictly avoid those containing sulfates. Also, avoid washing your hair every day. Just like our facial skin, the oiliness of our scalp varies from person to person. If after just one day you notice that oil has accumulated on your scalp and roots, then your scalp is naturally oily. If after a few days your hair is still not oily, and your scalp feels dry and tight, then your scalp is dry. Those with wavy hair can wash their hair more often, for example every other day, while curly and very curly hair can be washed less often - even up to once a week.
Washing your hair too often, such as every day or multiple times a day, can dry out your scalp and cause discomfort and flaking. Dry air can also dry out your scalp. To prevent frizzy hair from falling out, use more moisturizers and sulfate-free shampoos.
